The Third Wave of feminism focuses on "dispelling the myths of feminism, claiming feminism for a new generation, and embracing and incorporating our diversity..." (Seely 45). This involves embracing equality on all aspects. Hopefully, somewhere along the line, these girls will realize that no one person is better than the other. Girls grow up with the mindset that they need to outdo the other girls around them. Cliques turn in to a negative way of organizing girls throughout their lives. It pits girls against each other. By incorporating the ideals of the third wave, it is my hope that young girls will someday not be so competitive and exclusive when it comes to their peers.
Activism Log: Week 2
Activism
We had our first meeting with the Brownie Troop at Bithlo Community Center on Friday, February 19th. We started with introductions and a "name game" in the hopes that we could help the girls feel more comfortable with us and also to learn the eleven little girls' names while we worked with them. We worked through the first two sections of "The Penny Project." These sections included an introduction to the money-themed characters of the game, a basic description of money as it is used in society, going over the differences between WANTS and NEEDS, and an overview to the different types of U.S. currency and their different worths. The girls had fun coloring in their "Fun Books" and being called on to answer questions concerning money facts and math problems.
Reflection
It was fun to interact with the girls. They are at a very vivacious age where they are eager to learn and to please instructors. It was interesting to observe the "cliques" that are already forming in groups of girls that are only about ten years old (or younger). Among the two tables, the "older" girls (all the 4th graders) sat at a table to themselves, while the rest of the girls sat at another table. It was pointed out to me by our community contact that although one of the girls at table B was in fact a 4th grader like the girls at table A, she did not sit with them because "she likes to lie." It was interesting to me to already see the social divisions that begin in girls. Outsiders or girls with personality traits not welcomed by the whole are easily excluded.
